Is whispering bad for your vocal chords?

Specifically, when struggling with laryngitis, is it more harmful to whisper? I had heard from someone once that whispering strains the vocal chords because it forces air through a more constricted space in the vocal chords. Is this true?
*pardon the misspelling--yes, it should be cords, not chords. Thinking musically today, I guess. :)

If whispering is kept to the level that the air moves freely and with no forcing, then fine. But many people do not think they can be heard, so they start to *stage whisper* - when there is actual pressure on the air. This can become injurious. Gargle with salt water, DRINK tons of liquids ( if you do not pee every hour, you are not drinking enough!~) and use only the very mildest of lozenges - we use Thayer's slippery elm, which are only a demulcent. Stay WAY from the spicy ones - Fisherman's Friend is the WORST When You have irritation. Rest, rest rest and avoidance of irritation will allow your throat to heal. Have a humidifier going wherever you are. When I shop in the winter, I always find an excuse to *browse* in the greenhouse in the florist next to the food market - aaahhh!!!
