I am an oboist and I want to play trumpet. Is that true that playing trumpet could 'break' my embouchure?

I have learned oboe for five years and I think trumpet is a quite interesting instrument. I want to learn trumpet but my dad and one of my friend (an oboist too) said that playing trumpet may cause bad result. I may not play trumpet well and I may 'lost' my embouchure. I really want to know if that is true or not.

When your music teacher went to college to learn to be a music teacher (s)he played a certain main instrument. It could be anything at all - including oboe. (S)he had to perform on that instrument at a very high level and play in recitals.

In order to get that teaching degree, the college made him/her take some courses called "methods" where (s)he had to learn to play every single instrument in the band and orchestra too.

Now, if playing other instruments would "break" your embouchure, would colleges make their music majors do it and still make them play their main instrument in recitals? Wouldn't those professors in those college know whether doing this would "break" your embouchure and then not let the students do it? Ask your band director if (s)he can play every instrument in the band - if (s)he can then how can that be possible if playing different instruments damage your embouchure? Right, it can't be true - it's a myth.

So here's the real deal about it. Playing other instruments will not damage your embouchure by itself. But, if you take part of your oboe practice time to practice trumpet instead - then your oboe playing will suffer. The same is true for any instrument, if you practice English Horn all week (same essential embouchure) and ignore your oboe, your oboe playing will suffer. Not because of negative embouchure effects but because of a reduction in practice time.

If you're going to double (play More Than one instrument) then you have to be sure to keep your main instrument practicing up too. But, your private teacher will argue that "if you have time to practice trumpet, you should use that to practice oboe" and might even tell you all about this embouchure myth to convince you.

Now, when playing a brass instrument, you may develop a ring on your lips (usually from using too much pressure) that will indeed effect your ability to play some other instruments until that ring goes down. It's usually an hour or so - not "forever".
