Do you think his French and Portuguese as well?
I keep hearing people say that the Portuguese are very similar in French. For me two completely different sounds. I have heard and read in both languages. I think Portuguese shares more with Spanish words and believe it or not, with the Italian language. I wanted the Portuguese spoken in Portugal.
No, you guessed correctly. They are probably thinking "has French sounds nasal; Portuguese nasal sounds too. Ergo, Portuguese sounds like French. "However, it is not so simple. Phonologist tell us that all sounds are the nasal same and there are different types of membranes. The mean nasal French, Portuguese and American English are all slightly different from each other. Nevertheless, the French seem to have a Celtic substratum underlying the base Latin and Portuguese may also be a Celtic substratum. After all, the ancient Celts founded many cities of modern Portugal, as Coimbra (Conimbriga), Nobrega (Norinbriga) and Bragança (Brigantia). French and Portuguese also share some common substratic Celtic words too, like the street, and kicked for "street" and rabbit ("rabbit" in French) and laparoscopy ("Young Hare" in Portuguese). In all, Portuguese is a little more Romanized than French but not as much as Spanish and Italian. Romanization seems occurred more slowly in the western part of the Iberian Peninsula as the central part of the peninsula. Iberian (See Basque and Etruscan) and Celtiberian (or Hispano-Celtic), both have survived longer in this region.
