is there anything between a note and a half note on a piano?
i.e between A and A sharp or F flat and F...
Ok, this may seem like a weird question. but surely there must be, because if you can get single tone, rising in pitch continuously (like on a trombone or something) then there must be SOME tone in between the two semi-tones on a piano. so what happens if you need to use that note?
or is the difference so negligible that nobody can really hear it?
or does it really even exist?
Your terminology threw me so pardon me while I clean up your act.
When You speak of a note and a half note, you're using terminology having to do with rhythm, specifically how long a note is played before releasing it. But you're not talking about this at all---you want to know about pitches.
A trombone, unlike most instruments, can slide its way through pitches not representable by standard notation. By the same token, the oboist has to possess keen tonal memory because without it, his/her pitches will be all over the place.
Middle East and Far Eastern music has become recognizable for its reliance on occasional semitones which, by nature, represent quarter steps away from a ground or standardized fixed pitch in our Western-accepted tempered tonal system. Music requiring semitonal use will be marked as such but is normally thought of as an altered sound and not an original one.
In our blues songs, we have what is commonly called a "blue note." This is a semi-tone influence, believe it or not. In fact, we have the "blues scale" which is a variation on more common scale configurations but inserts that special whole and half step sequence that gives off the blues "perfume." The performer deliberately forces the pitch to drop slightly when a particular note is reached in the music. It will be a point where the selected note will really stand out and be altogether conspicuous. For the performer, it's a moment in which he/she has total control over the listener because the listener is being deprived of the usual pitch sequences. In effect, the performer plays with the listener's comfort zone.
Very interesting question that impresses me because it would never occur to most people to ever ask about it.
