Definitive Jazz
Greatest Jazz Albums of the 00's?
I've asked about the 80's and 90's, now what would you say are the most essential/definitive jazz albums of the 00's... and also, on this Q, if someone could maybe, explain the progression of jazz music after the fusion era, and how jazz split off and changed through the last few decades, that would be quite interesting. That might be a tall order, but you can be very general in your explanation if you like. It seems to me like the 00's are kind of "anything goes" in jazz, but I am no expert, maybe someone here can put some logic to it.

This might be the best decade that jazz has ever had.
Its very obvious that jazz is almost completely dead to most of the world. The musicians today, are the artists who can't turn away from their art. They have little chance of cashing in on a big selling album, especially the albums that are as creative as the ones I am going to list. These musicians are dignified in that they make the exact albums that they want to make, regardless of the pay off.
These are not the albums that you hear on commercial jazz radio stations such as WBGO. These musicians can be heard on the equally dignified radio station WKCR (the best station ever). These musicians play mostly in basement clubs in New York, sometimes touring small clubs outside of the city.
Kurt Rosenwinkel- Any and all of his albums.
Chris Potter 10- Song For Anyone.
Not his band called Chris Potter's Underground. This band is much different. A small string section blends naturally with the jazz band. It doesn't sound like a jazz band WITH string, it just sounds like great music played by a great band. Chris Potter is awesome on this album.
Joe Lovano and Us Five- Folk Art.
One of my favorite sax players of any era. great album.
Drew Gress- 7 Black Butterflies.
Very modern.
Scott Colley- Architect of the Silent Moment.
John Hollenbeck Large Ensemble- External Interlude.
Nothing like what you hear When You think of a Big Band. Its very modern big band.
Time Berne- The Shell Game.
Dave Douglas- Freak In.
Ari Hoenig- Inversations.
Dafnis Prieto- Absolute Quartet
Gonzalo Rubalcaba- Avatar.
James Jabbo Ware- Vignettes in the Spirit of Ellington.
This music doesn't sound like Ellington to me, at all. Regardless, its very creative big Band Music.
Bennie Maupin- Early Reflections.
I completely love this album.
