Ibanez RG370DX -- single-coil (middle) pickup gets in the way?
I used to play on Fender Strat (which was my first electric) and then got Ibanez RG370DX as a gift. It has two humbuckers and a single-coil pickup in between. The pickups are set up pretty high and since there are three of them, there is not much space between. Thus my pick often hits the pickups and frankly that's a bit annoying.
I'm wondering if that's my technique which is not consistent (e.g. I move my hand along the strings and thus not always play exactly in that tiny spot between pickups), or is it something that I just need to get used to, or that's indeed a disadvantage of three-pickup setup (and that's why lots of Classic Rock players use Les Paul which has two pickups with plenty of space in between).
Use the screws on the side of the pickups to lower the pickups further into the body of the guitar. This has several advantages. First - you are less likely to hit the pickups. Second - you will get a better tone from the guitar. Third - your guitar will sustain better. Fourth - it will stay in tune better. Disadvantage is that you will loose a little output power, so you may have to turn the amp up a touch.
All this is due to the interaction of the magnetic field in the pickups with the strings. The closer to the strings the pickup is, the more energy is transferred from the string to the pickup, and the more the magnetic field affects the string vibration.
