How do I play the chords in Sheet Music?
Are you suppose to be able to play the chords and notes at the same time?
How do you know what the stumming pattern is?
For guitar that is
No, you don't necessarily play the chords and melody notes at the same time.
If you're playing guitar, you're usually either strumming or fingerpicking the chords in some kind of rhythmic pattern as accompaniment to a singer or another instrument playing the melody. Or, you're picking out the melody and someone else is strumming or fingerpicking the chords as accompaniment.
If you're a more advanced fingerpicking guitarist, it IS possible to play the melody and a bass line and/or chords simultaneously. You can find sheet music arranged for fingerstyle guitar, or you can work out your own fingerpicking arrangements if you know the melody and the chords.
The best way to figure out the strumming pattern for accompanying a singer or melody instrument is to listen to the song you want to learn and see if you can hear the underlying rhythm groove -- then experiment to see how to express that on your guitar.
