how do I stop my bass amp from picking up radio signals?
why is it doing this? also, is their any dmage that occurs from running a guitar through a bass amp?
OK, first DO NOT lift the 3rd pin ground on the AC plug. First, it will not help this situation. Second, in the event of a component failure or short within the amp you have a good chance of being electrocuted. And third, the poster that recommended that obviously has no formal electronics education, or they would have known better than to recommend such a dangerous and stupid solution.
Now that I've got my rant out of the way, lets look at your problem.
Guitar amps and radio receivers actually have a lot in common. With a guitar rig, your guitar and cable function as an antenna. Any distortion circuits will act as a dectector, and finally the amplifier and speakers bring the audio levels up to where you can hear them.
Is the radio interference there only When You plug in your guitar? If so, it could very easily be the Guitar Cable or the guitar itself.
If the radio signals are present even without the guitar plugged in, then there is either a grounding problem inside the amp or a failed filter capacitor. Most decent guitar amps have a filter capacitor right at the input that shunts radio frequencies to ground (before they have a chance to get amplified).
OK, so what can you do about it? If it's the guitar, then additional shielding can be installed in the control cavity. That will help, but not totally eliminate the problem.
If it's in the amp, it probably needs to go to a tech. It could be anything from a failed solder joint, a broken wire, or a component that gave up the ghost.
Sometimes (with inexpensive amps) they can be functioning as designed, but still have this problem. If that's the case, an RF (radio frequency) filter can be installed on the input for not a whole lot of money.
